Through the project “Activating future leaders for nature protection” we reached two more high schools in the project: “Ion Constantin Brătianu” High School in Hațeg and the “Elena Ghiba-Birta” National College in Arad.
The topics of discussion were related to the communities’ inability to use certain resources, especially firewood (in Hațeg) and the temporary constructions of fishermen on the banks and islands of the Mures river, areas with strict protection. Through these constructions people destroy the nesting sites of birds. In addition to the risks mentioned, these wild species are permanently threatened by activities such as motorised boats, dumping of substances in the water (from dumpsites, vehicles), illegal deforestation, food or plastic debris in recreational areas, poaching, etc.
At the end of each meeting, the students created Advisory Councils and Scientific Councils for each high school. These councils will be managed by students for each protected area.
Through this national project, we provide support and expertise in increasing the capacity of nature education programmes for national and nature parks in Romania.
